Having problems getting in because of the 503 response code error?

Try updating your minecraft.jar with this. Worked for me. Also, it's compatible with the 1.4.4 server.

Having same problem. 1.4.5 not working either. Still error code 503 or connection timed out.

If you would google what error 503 means you would find out that "The Web server (running the Web site) is currently unable to handle the HTTP request due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server.". If you then read the URL you know that the minecraft servers are simply overloaded.
