This is a note that pops onto my desktop when I try to connect, and on the screen says:
Connection lost: response code 503 etc ...
Minecraft.net has been having problems all day, don't know why you get the fatal error about it, and not just a message in your launcher.. But the 503 error is because it can't establish a connection to the auth server...
