Question about environment changes when logged out

So last night I logged out inside a building in the darklands. When I logged in this morning, the building was gone. This was strangely disconcerting but it got me thinking about something. What would happen if the ground under me was mined out? Could I potentially fall to my death when logging in?

No, you should not die from that. As far as I know, if you spawn somewhere and there is no floor at the height you are coming into the game, you simply spawn at the next possible block up or down so you do not fall or suffocate in a wall.
