New Contests: Underwater City & Adventure!
This time, there are two contests!
First, we will build an underwater city! Here are the guidelines! Comment design questions here and I will update the entry.
Further, you can write an adventure story with the story admin!
New voting mechanism proposal
I changed the process for contests now. First, they are open for submissions, then open for voting, then they are closed. This will prevent people voting before all entries are submitted or after the contest is closed which was possible before. I will therefore announce a week of voting after a contest is stopped from allowing submissions.
Further, I am proposing an expansion of the people who can vote and introduce weighted voting instead. So Architects, Masters, Elders and myself can vote with the following weights:
- Owner: 1.5
- Elders: 1
- Masters: 0.5
- Architects: 0.3
This weighting is currently only a draft and I am happy for suggestions.
Ballon contest winners announcement!
We have closed the balloon contest and are ready to announce the winners! This was really a contest anyone could participate and also the first one where people could enter several submissions. The result is that we have 21 individual balloons that add a great scenery to the city and a lot of new stuff to explore! Thanks to all participants! Here are the winner per user levels

Shop now open for enchantments, blocked for damaged stuff!
I now opened the shop officially for enchanted stuff (same for deposits). However there seem to be some rare bugs with damaged goods so I decided to block those from the shop for now. But I think this is not such a big loss. Specially if we can enable enchantments instead. Please be aware that sometimes you might get a message that an item is damaged while it should not be. That is the bug that I am talking about.
If you have an item that is new or does not show a damage-bar but is rejected from the shop system, please do not use it, keep it and tell me about it. I need to investigate to find a solution to the issue.
1.2 Update Status
Here is what’s happening with the 1.2 status: I am still waiting for craftbukkit to release a recommended build. While the developers of Craftbukkit are working hard on it, there is no say when it will be done. I will make a post here when a build is out. Then, I will have to make sure all the vital plugins are updated and work fine with the new version. Then, I will start the upgrade process to get it done ASAP. Hard to say when that will be though.
Skylands rescued!
With the great help of azkedar I managed to regenerate new, mint, island-in-the-sky lookalike skylands lots! And it seems that this is a method that is supported by the very internals of bukkit, so it’s to stay around!
All that is left to do regenerate some 50-70 lots in the skylands…. which will take some time. But at least it works now. Thanks Azkedar!
Please test enchantments in shop & deposit
I have now implemented enchantments in the shop and the deposit function. To make sure no valuable stuff gets lost, I ask you to test it as much as you can. Enchant some wooden stuff or cheap armor, also damaged stuff etc and please tell me if something goes wrong!

This week on Uncovery Minecraft
I will be on another business trip this week so probably I will have only little to no time to connect to the server. The good news are that there is a first beta build for 1.2 bukkit out, and that the major plugins also are running to be ready. So if all goes well I will upgrade the server to 1.2.3 coming weekend.
I will be reachable via email and lot applications and other issues can be addressed quite well however. So if you have any issues, please post to the blog and I should get an email (which is not the case with forum updates).

Temp 1.2 server on port 25564
I installed a TEMPORARY 1.2 server on port 25564.
There was a bug with the server. I reinstalled it, please check if it works now and comment if it crashes. Please note that I am running the Carftbukkit developer releases. There are bound to be bugs. As of this writing for example, plants do not grow and mobs do not spawn except for mob spawners. I will try to update it as new versions come out.
Here are the rules:
- Once I upgrade the main server to 1.2, the map will be deleted. I am not kidding. Do not ask for it or parts to me kept. Depending on how long it takes until I can upgrade, I might delete the map earlier and create a new one. Specially if there are relevant bug fixes for 1.2 out.
- PvP is off, protection is off. I do not want to hear complaints about griefing. I cannot prevent it. If you don’t like griefers, play on the 1.1 server.
- Whitelist is ON. If you just registered, you cannot join however, since the whitelist only updates on a server restart (1.2 issue). And the server does not automatically restart either.
/ws commands work now w/o /ws!
I have installed a alias plugin that allows for server-side aliases. This means you can now use the following commands instead of the alternative /ws <whatever>.

- /buy: /ws buy
- /cancel: /ws cancel
- /history: /ws history
- /list: /ws list

Please note that this does not work namely for /ws help!
1.2 update – what to do – what will happen
It was announced today that the version 1.2 will come out this week. What does this mean?
It means that your Minecraft client will ask you to update. Please know that doing so will disable you from playing on Uncovery for now. Of course you want to try it out. So you can install this jar switcher BEFORE the update comes to switch between two versions of minecraft. Make sure you backup your minecraft folder before installing the switcher or updating minecraft.
When 1.2 comes out, it will take some time until the server can be updated. We will have to wait until all plugins are updated, too. Then I will update the server, and along with that create a new darklands world, and reset all the lots in the darklands so you will have to get a new one. This is so people have a fair chance of getting a lot in the biome they like. First come, first serve.
Also, the building height will double. This means that all the ground will stay around 64 height, but instead of only building 64 blocks up from there, you will be able to build more than 180 blocks up! This goes for all worlds except the nether (as far as i know).

Stories can now clear inventories & give items! All works of course only in the flatlands and the city. Read the Story admin page for further instructions!
Stories can now enforce Survival mode!
If you write a story now, you can enforce that a user is switched to survival mode. This is specially important in flatlands and city stories where you do not want to user to fly or be invincible. Now you can build traps! Of course, for the obvious reasons, you cannot enforce creative mode however.
Also, if you do not want users to jump into your story somewhere in the middle or skip parts of it, simply tell them the last 2-3 letters of the NEXT code in any part of the story. On the next sign, you replace those 2-3 letters with “?”. If a user uses a code with a ? in it, the program will ask him to find the previous story to get the missing code pieces.
Story “Sand Storms” finished!
I just finished the first epic story called “Sand Storms”! It spans 23 different stations and is a true adventure – not for the faint hearted!

Stories now allow colors and titles!
You can now use colors in your titles to highlight specific words or intrsuctions. You can also give titles to stories to make it easier for you to write longer stories that span over several locations, signs and storyarcs!
Tell a story!
You can now tell a story at any point of the server! You simply fill in a form with your story of any length, get a code, put the code on a sign and EVERYONE can read the story in-game! Describe your builds! Make adventures! Write books! It’s all in your hands!
Go to the story-admin page and see for yourself! It shows the hitcounts so you know howoften the story was read, you can edit it and delete it. There is no limit in length and number of stories!
BinkyDude and AmortusR banned.
I just banned BinkyDude and AmortusR. After they griefed my office yesterday and stole stuff out of it, I tried to not overreact and did not do anything right away. I slept over it and also read the logs. The conclusion is that they griefed intentionally and with the goal of removing items from my office. So it’s a ban.
Additional note for understanding: They exploited a minecraft bug to get a dragon egg out of my office. After it succeeded once, they went on to get all 4. If someone had tried something once to prove a concept, told me about it and left it at that, it would have been a different story. But to go on for another 3 times is enough to make me ban even donators and architects from the server.
Skylands troubles
Note: Since some people apparently refuse to read through the text below, prefer to panic and then ask me for a solution of a problem they only assumed despite the fact that it is written below that there is no reason to worry about anything, and then come running to me with fatalistic comments about their stuff in the skylands and start planning for the apocalypse, here is the TL:DR for you:
I will NOT delete the skylands.
You will NOT loose your stuff if you have a lot there.
There is no reason to worry.
We all liked and used the skylands as they were created some months ago. They were created to allow a bigger space for larger constructions. There should be little land or nothing in them. There are several issues with the skylands now however:
- I cannot regenerate them when they are abandoned. Regenerating them creates a normal word. Same if I would simply delete the save files on the server.
- It is troublesome to delete them once a lot is abandoned. I need to “delete” the contents so that it becomes a void at least. However doing so lags the server so much that all users are disconnected for some 30-60 seconds.
- When 1.2 comes out, all lots will have a 256+ building height, meaning twice as much as now.
The only solution is to simply let it ‘die’ by not giving out additional lots there and hoping that someday we will have an alternative. I have a similar issue with the flatlands by the way, but the lots are much smaller so there is no issue with deleting them. It just takes much longer for me to do it since I have to first select & delete the land above 64 blocks and then do set to soil for below 64 blocks instead of just typing //regen.
Since 1.2 will be out hopefully this or next month, I will not do anything to see what happens. However it is likely that I will in the long run deprecate the skylands just as the ‘old world’.
