Server updates
The server is now running on a new DNS & IP address successfully. I also made all the changes at the server lists etc. Also all contents of the website have been updated.
I also made some changes to the way the different parts of the page access the database. There might be still a couple of glitches. If you find something does not work, please tell me ASAP.
Minecraft Bros – Sheep Farm!
Server Address change
I will move the server to the domain uncovery.me this weekend. If you cannot connect, please try the new address. The move should take only a couple of minutes. The website and the minecraft server should then both run on that domain name. So there will be no more confusion between uncovery.net and minecraft.uncovery.net.
Warping in stories now possible!
I enabled now a field that lets you warp places in a story. Specifically, it lets you warp to one of the /warp points. The nice thing is that I can create warp points for you that are otherwise not visible in the /warp list. To prevent abuse, I made it so you cannot warp to one of the pre-made warp points, only to one that I created for you. To achieve this, all warp names have to start with “story_”. Talk to me if you want to have a warp point for your story. Also, this works only in the city – since it’s a story tool, not a taxi service.
See the story admin for details.
Flatlands Users, please read!
After much discussion has been done in various places, I came to the following conclusion:
In order to allow flatlands users to rank up & be recognized for their work, we will start contests exclusively for the flatlands. Winners of the contests however will NOT immediately recieve a level upgrade like the survival players since there is MUCH less work in creative builds than in survival builds. We will create a ladder system where someone has to win a set of contests (2+) to get a level upgrade.
The builds from the creative contests will be copied to a different part of the city so users know if things have been built creative or survival and creative builds will not make survival builds look worse.
However, this requires that we keep up the same standards of living for the flatlands as for the empire and other places. This has as it’s main consequence that pixelart is now not anymore tolerated in the flatlands.
So all flatlands users, you have until 10th of June to remove all your pixels art, writing etc!
New backup & restart process, minimized downtime
I have revamped the backup & restart process. In the past, the server would shutdown, make all the backups and restart. This would take about 10 minutes (its about 2GB of data). The backup includes the plugins, the server worlds, the website, the logfiles and all backend code written by me that runs all kind of stuff.
From today on, the process is different. The server now stops saving the world changes while running, can thus back up the world file & plugins w/o shutting down. During that, the system backs up the world files. When finished (after 10 minutes) it will save the not saved changes to the world file, resumes saving in general and then backs up all the rest. Then, the server will shut down, backup the logfiles only and then immediately restart. This shortens the downtime of the server to less than a minute.
The advantage is that the server downtime is influencing our ranking on the server list. We are listed there as having an uptime between 99.3% and 98.1%. Every percent higher is a higher ranking chance in the list. Also, it allows people to relogin w/o waiting for 10 minutes after a shutdown. The restarts are still needed to reclaim memory for the server that some plugins will not set free and therefore slowly slowing the server down over time.
The disadvantage is that during 10 minutes, in case the server would crash right then, the world changes done in those 10 minutes would be lost. Which is a really neglectable issue, specially since the downtime happens during the time when there are the fewest people on the server.
Voting system adjusted
I re-wrote the way enchanted items are won in the lottery. You now have a 8% chance to win 1 item with 1 enchantment of a random level (1-max). So no more multiple enchantments. But you can win ANY enchantable item and ANY single enchantment that is possible for that item.
In the future, I plan to enhance it so that you can get on top of that a chance for multiple enchantments per item. Due to the fact that you can combine only certain enchantments on certain items, this is not so easy to do, so it is postponed for now.
Yes, this disables winning a super-enchanted item, but as a compensation the chance is now 8% instead of 3%, and the variety is much bigger.
It should now also be impossible to win snow golem eggs since they do not work anyhow. If you still get one, please let me know.
Creative world contests
I am wondering how to make it possible for flatlands users to advance in levels. I created a card on our issue tracker. Please discuss there about possible solutions.
Castle Tower – Master & Elder rooms
I added a new tower to my castle. It has a spiral of many side-towers that circle the building. There a 3 starting on each floor, reaching to the next floor. 1 of them houses the staircase to the next floor, the 2 others are empty. I would like to invite all Master and Elder level users to come and decorate one of them. Here are the building guidelines:
- You can make the entrance smaller and fit a door. Otherwise please do not make too dramatic changes to the structure. If in doubt, ask me. If it looks cool and fits the overall tower, I am happy to discuss.
- Please do not use glow stone
- You can put anything inside. Redstone machinery, living quarters, a safebox – anything goes
- Please put your name on a sign outside located similar to the floor number sign.
- Do not use the ground floor or top floor rooms.
Underwater contest winners!
I have now closed the voting for the underwater contest, and the results are in. This contest had relatively few participants, and quite different types of entries, which made it hard to compare. So here is the list:
- chrispypankake (Architect): 2.4
- parrtypus (Settler): 2.6
- patapat2211 (Citizen): 2.92
- thomas_dauber (Settler): 3.13
- Highboy (Settler): 3.4
- azkedar (Elder): 3.6
- Xecaria (Settler): 4.16
And here are the prizes:
- So the big winner is Xecaria! She wins a stack of diamonds and a level upgrade to Architect. Congratz!
- Azkedar, 2nd in ranking, gets a stack of diamonds!
- Highboy, 3rd in Ranking receives an early Citizen upgrade!
Thanks to all who participated & voted! Winners, please check your deposit boxes!
Banned james1726354 for using an X-Ray cheat!
I just banned james1726354 for using an X-Ray cheat. I have the following logfile entries of diamonds being mined. I went “on-site” and saw clearly targeted tunneling to the locations. There were other incidents in the logfile similar to this one. If you want to know how this works, please read the plugin description.
Read the rules guys!

Large Biomes – the new Darklands?
There is a new snapshot for MC out, that features a new world type with “large biomes”. Here is a picture of what that means. I wonder if that would be a good idea for the daklands, if we expand the borders accordingly. Currently the darklands are about 2500×2500 blocks large, maybe 3k or 4k would be better in that case.
Of course this would come only in effect after the next version of minecraft is released.

MinecraftBros – The Hunger Games! (And just how bad I am at them…)
All-time visitors high on the server!
I wanted to share with you today that we had an all-time visitors high two days ago with more than 700 people on the website in a single day. The visit statistics on the website has been continuously increasing since January (graph from Jan 2012-today):
We might be reaching the 1000 visitors mark if things continue like that. So a big thanks to all who have been contributing in any way to the server, be it builds, friendliness to others, coding, reporting errors, etc etc etc, every little bit helps to make this server a better place!
So a ‘yay’ for the Uncovery community!
Empire world enlarged
Because we have so many new users recently and start running out of a decent selection of lots for new users, I have today enlarged the empire world by 176 lots, so 2 full rows of lots all around. There are now plenty of new lots in all biome types.
Since the bottom-left corner should still be A1, I had to shift all lots by 2 letters/digits, so if you were K11, you are now M13. You access rights etc should not have changed of course. To my knowledge, all website documentation such as the maps, borders, the settlers questionnaire etc have been changed. If you still find something that is not correct on the website, please tell me.
New Contest: Egyptian Town!
I started a new contest: Egyptian Town. Please get the details from the Contest manager.
Courier help added
Since we have the courier software since some time, I forgot that we actually do not mention that anywhere. So I added now a page for the courier service.
Shop poll!
Trying to always improve, we have now a poll to find out what you think about the shop:
Please answer these short questions to help us!
XP buying now in-game!
Azkedar ported my web-based XP buying into the game and now you can buy in-game. So the web-interface is removed. Use /ws help buyxp for details.
